Call for applets

We are scanning web for Java applets under Free/Open source licenses

  • We do not care about supported Java version or even if it runs today. If we like it, we will make it run today.
  • We will arrange a code review for it.
  • If the applet code is old and does not follow standards, also not a problem. If the applet is good and the code is awful, we will reformat and refactor it.
  • Depending on how much work it is, it is common for us to fix some small bugs or adapt layout to use space more sparingly, making the applet usable next to other material on the same page.
  • If it needs the rights of the signed applet, it is almost always possible to make it less ambitious about privileges, and we can do this for the applet we like.

We are searching with the search engines and even plan to launch our own spider just for that. However the search is difficult. There are some good applets that have been found after weeks of looking for. We wonder if anybody in the world would be able to find these when one needs to learn something for tomorrow.

We are working with SourceForge as well.

  • If you know a good applet under Free or Open Source license, notify us in this page.
  • If you own a cool applet that is posted on a web for ten years without any license at all, maybe you could think about granting for it any Free/Open source license of your choice.
  • If you own a good applet that is under deliberately non-free license, think again. How much money have you already made from it? Maybe it is more fun to hand for community?

Please do not submit applet aggregating sites that cannot tell apart from Free software, free for non commercial use, free trial and free spam daily in your mailbox. Also, we currently cannot support the output of tools that generate executable java .jar or .class files only. We need the source code for reviewing, and the best to have it at least mostly human written.

We are interested in education applets. Game applets may only be interesting if they represent some really old, notable game. The playing strength of the applet does not matter, just needs to follow the rules. Applets that are just for decoration or general improvements of the web site (like upload applets) are the least interesting group.

Finally, we have hired the Duke as a campaign manager due lack of resources. We believe we understand correctly statements at http://java.sun.com/logos/ and then following the link under Duke to http://kenai.com/projects/duke/pages/Home that we have right for that.
